It’s been a while. What’s everybody been up to?

TapServer 2.0 Who says you can’t solve a people-problem with technology! After introducing TapServer nearly five years ago, 95% of Colle McVoy employees are closing their timesheets on time and enjoying a cold brew for a job well done. Soon, they’ll include two wine options. This month, we return to the downtown Minneapolis advertising agency featured in numerous media outlets such as, and for its ingenious technological solution that rewards employees who complete their timesheets on time with a pull from the TapServer.

Our host will present on TapServer 2.0, Colle McVoy’s next generation TapServer that integrates RFID technology with directory services to deliver tasty beverages to employees, encouraging positive behavior over past methods that tried to shame employees into getting their reports turned in to their managers. He’ll also discus Hatch, which is their in-house incubator for devising clever ways to use their technical capabilities to solve business problems. This is our last meetup of 2018! And we have plenty to discuss since we last came together in September. Apple has released macOS Mojave and iOS 12 along with new (and highly anticipated) Macs, iPhones and iPads.

Jamf hosted its annual and just completed its annual conference in Los Angeles. And will have landed on Mars. We’ll also reprise a subject from this time a couple years ago: Digital stocking stuffers for the Mac admin. We may not all celebrate the same holidays but we all wear socks and love technology, right? What’s on your list of digital stocking stuffers? Come with your list of must-haves and cool things to share. Books.

Wi-Fi tools. Backup utilities.

Management apps. Coding apps.

Gadgets, gadgets, gadgets!. Great Twitter accounts to follow. Websites every Mac admin should know Can you recommend an app, or site that has really become an important part of your administrator’s toolbox? Speaking of stocking stuffers, we’re giving away a license for Microsoft Office 2019 Home & Student. This is a perpetual license that never expires and is valued at $149.99. No Office 365 subscription required.

To win, be prepared to answer this question: The date of our meetup just happens to be the date when an infamous dragon was slain in the realm of fantasy. What’s the dragon’s name and how do you know?

Look no further than your Mac for the answer. We’ll draw from a list of attendees who answer this question correctly. Meet at Colle McVoy We’ll meet at offices in downtown Minneapolis and we’ll also have dinner and beverages provided by, so come hungry.

For Mac and iOS administrators, Apple’s is the most important Apple event of the year. This is our first look into what’s to come 3-4 months later. We’ll get introduced to new operating systems, new applications, possibly new hardware and (who knows?) possibly one more thing. Macbrained Twin Cities is gathering at from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. For a post WWDC keynote gathering to discuss the announcements of the day. We’ll celebrate! Maybe we’ll commiserate.

But we should have plenty to talk about. Please, join us! We haven’t met since November 2017. What’s everybody been up to? Open agenda Based on feedback from past meetups, we’re trying something new and “planning” an open agenda meetup! Let’s catch up with each other and have a conversation about what’s happening in everyone’s world. You don’t have to bring any topics to discuss (but bring some if you have them), but we bet you probably have plenty to talk about. Schools are planning their summer work.

Developers are preparing for, which is right around the corner. And the summer conference season kicks into high gear with in early June, in late June, and in early July. And how about that macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 update, huh? Apple has begun enforcing the security we’ve been hearing about for the past several months. Applications that load kexts (antivirus, VPN, VM and more) now require user approval to load.

The only way to avoid user-approval is to use an MDM. And they’re pushing hard for developers to convert 32-bit apps to 64-bit. How do they do this? Through users! Launching a 32-bit app on macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 now displays a compatibility warning alerting the user the app is “not optimized for your Mac”. Let’s call the Help Desk! But, we did get a shiny new feature that has administrators very excited.

The startosinstall command line tool in the Install macOS High Sierra.app app bundle includes a new argument: -eraseinstall. This lets administrators take a Mac that’s been in production, completely erase the old macOS and user data, and install a fresh macOS without having to boot to external media such as a hard drive or NetBoot server. We’ll definitely cover these new 10.13.4 items including ways to manage KEXTs, suppress the “not optimized” alert and take advantage of the new -eraseinstall feature. Meet at mono and host our May 16 meetup at with a top-floor view of downtown Minneapolis that’s pretty hard to beat in late Spring.

We’ll also have dinner and beverages, so come hungry. What’s in a number? In early 2018, Microsoft Office for Mac turns “16”. No, not 16 years old, but version 16. Microsoft’s partnership with Mac admins has made deploying and managing Office 2016 for Mac easy. Through the, we’ve had direct access to members of the teams who are responsible for new features, packaging, profile/plist management, user feedback and bug reports. Join us at headquarters Thursday, November 16 (coincidence or not?), for a remote presentation from and from the Redmond campus at Microsoft.

They’ll tell us what changes to expect in the next few months and how those changes will affect us. We’ll learn about their major engineering effort with version 16 to align the Mac code with the PC code (an effort years in the making) and what new features this code change helps bring to the Mac platform. Get started Microsoft is asking for our help to test workflows that may be impacted by the simple 15 to 16 number change, test scripts and VBA code against the changes in the code base, test third party add-ins your organization needs to remain productive and test deployment with third party management tools such as.

This is a first-of-its-kind event where Mac admins can effect change before a new major Microsoft Office for Mac version ships to production. Join us to get started and learn how to participate.

We’ll be live-streaming this event using Google Hangouts at. And taking questions via MacAdmins Slack in the #macbrainedtwincities channel. America’s #1 gerbil coffin Are you a fan?

DEP is Apple’s solution for “zero touch” or “out of the box” deployments where macOS and iOS devices automatically join their management server and configure themselves in the field without the need for hands-on setup by technology staff. DEP was introduced in early 2014, and since then administrators have had three years to learn some best practices and develop some tricks for a smooth rollout. Did Patrick get his end-users to ❤️ IT?

Jamf is also providing pizza and beverages. June 22 In June, we join again for their EDU iOS and macOS Bootcamp and present our second Solutions Summit. These are short talks (typically less than 10 minutes) where an individual provides an inspiring presentation about something he or she is passionate about. For this event, we want to try something similar. We are going to spend approximately 2.5 hours having individuals share a short presentation in a rapid fire session of presenters. Here is your challenge: You will get exactly 8 minutes (maximum) to show something cool that you do with a Mac or an iOS device. This compelling presentation should be related to your work managing Apple devices or something that you do on your own personal time.

This could be a demonstration of an app that has changed your (the) world. You could demonstrate a management script that you wrote or an incredible workflow that you’ve created that has made your life easier. Another possibility would be an incredible video or series of photos you’ve created using Apple devices in some unique way. We want you to show us your best thing. Remember — you get only 8 minutes to present. Logistics:. You will get exactly 8 minutes.

If you go over we will cut you off to make sure the next presenter has his/her 8 minutes. So we don’t get 12 people all trying to present on the same thing, we are asking you to submit your presentation idea and the committee that is putting on this event will notify you if you are selected to present.

Due to time we may not be able to accept every presentation submitted. As part of your submission, please let us know if you have any unusual AV requirements beyond a microphone to amplify your voice, a plug in for connecting your device for audio amplification, and a projector. Twin Cities Mac Admins Solution Summit Presenters Application. Update May 30, 2016: We had to postpone making our video of the April meetup available since we wanted to include the tour of the new Jamf headquarters.

We think it was worth it! A lot can happen in a year. Things move fast. And I were chatting in Slack the other day and we realized that just a year ago we both worked in the same office. Today we both work for different organizations. A year ago in our meetups, we were discussing the not-so-new vulnerability in OS X and a rumor Apple may be working on a way to let us. And a year ago, we held our April meetup in.

A year later and we’re planning to hold our April meetup in JAMF Software’s Town Hall again But this time we’ll gather in their new offices in in downtown Minneapolis. To accommodate their rapid growth, they have moved down the street just a few blocks to a location that’s nearly four times the size and still has awesome views of the city. Photos by Kevin C.
